Media Monday, Erin Thomas, SIP Northwest

Erin ThomasErin Thomas has been a long-time freelance writer and editor in the greater Seattle area, with a focus on lifestyle writing. As one of the pioneering journalists for WINO Magazine when it first printed in 2007, Erin has since been published in Seattle Met Bride & Groom, Seattle Woman magazine, The Bellevue Visitors Guide, Seattleite magazine, Washington State University Magazine, CitySearch and, of course, SIP Northwest magazine where she is editor in chief. Thomas has also served as copy editor for radio and broadcast and has experience in marketing and public relations.

Q: What’s your favorite story you’ve done in the last week?

A: I’m currently working on a post on kombucha, which is far less intimidating than I originally thought it was. A lot of the time consumers hear an Asian title, the word “fermented” and think cabbage or get a general misconception without even trying it. The effervescent tea is not only available in every flavor across the board but it’s also really good for you. I enjoy cracking fallacies in food and drink for our readers.

Q: What skills do new journalists need?

A: Drive, curiosity, congeniality, respect and ethics… As well as thick skin, low wage expectations and ability to take criticism.

Q:  If you weren’t working at your current job, what would you be doing?

A: Traveling and eating more expansively than I already am! I also think I was a florist in a past life – I have a keen sensibility about floral arrangements.

Q: Finish this sentence: “A good PR person is …”

A: Idealistic and innovative, assertive but not over-the-top aggressive. Organized and connected.

Q: What hidden talent or skill do you have that viewers/readers don’t know about you?

A: As humbly as I can put it, I have a pretty solid singing voice. However, unless you are the shower walls or my car dashboard, you won’t likely hear it any time soon.

The PR Pro Takeaway: This jack of all trades gives great advice to new journalists and has a clear-cut vision of what all PR pros should strive to achieve. It sounds like her shower walls and car dashboard are well entertained.
