Writer Will Greenwald also attended this years New York Coffee Festival where he first found cascara and was so curious he explored the new beverage in his recent piece. At the festival, tucked between the endless coffee and scattered tea and pastry booths were Caskai and Nomad Trading Company, two cascara vendors pitching their beverages.
Greenwald writes, “This is a strange beverage that’s still very new and rare in the United States, and it will be interesting to see if it catches on. This could be the new kombucha, or yerba mate, or cold brew, or flat white, or any other health/coffee beverage that picks up a lot of popularity in a relatively short time and becomes a standard option for coffee shops and grocery stores.”

GoSkagit: Despite payments, tribes unhappy with Atlantic salmon farms
As an investigation continues into the collapse of an Atlantic salmon farm near Cypress Island, Cooke Aquaculture has paid some area tribes for catching the farm-raised fish. While the Samish Indian Nation is not one of the three tribes Cooke offered to pay, Samish Chairman Tom Wooten said in a news release that the tribe is concerned about Cooke’s business practices.
“The latest allegations that the company was trying to buy the silence of others during an ongoing investigation is alarming,” he said.
The Samish tribe is among those arguing there is no place for Atlantic salmon in the Pacific Northwest. Other area tribes and conservation groups have made similar statements.
