Samish Indian Nation: Tribal PR

Raising awareness of tribal services

Background

The Samish Indian Nation is a community leader in and around Anacortes, Washington and Skagit County, providing health and natural resource services that benefit tribal members and the larger community. This includes operating the only Head Start program in the Anacortes community, for both tribal and non-tribal children. The tribe also offers senior services and activities on behalf of the community.

The tribe’s Natural Resources Department is leading key restoration and ecosystem support operations around the region, including a multi-year beach restoration program in Fidalgo Bay to restore habitats for feeder fish that are a key food source for salmon in the region.

Despite its large impact in the region, the Samish Indian Nation has not engaged in a strategic communications and media relations approach. The tribe hired Fearey to create a strategic communications roadmap to raise awareness for the tribe’s efforts throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Strategies

Fearey, in consultation with Samish tribal leadership, developed a sustained media outreach and thought leadership program to help raise new awareness of the tribe’s work with target local and regional audiences. A supporting social media strategy was also developed to help tell the tribe’s story on Facebook.

Results

The team’s 12-month goal for media stories was secured and exceeded in just four months of work with more than 14 placements secured adding up to almost 28.5 million media impressions. Placements were in both local and regional publications, including a feature story on KNKX-FM (NPR). Progress on social media is also trending well ahead of the 12-month goal, with a four month increase in followers of close to 20 percent.
